Septic Tank Maintenance

Author: Joseph Then

If you do not live in the city then you have a septic tank. This is where all of the waste from your home goes when it goes down the drain. It is a holding center of sorts. You are not hooked into the city waste system which carries it away to a treatment plant. Instead it sits in your septic tank and on occasion you have someone come out and clean it out. It then goes to the treatment plant.

It is very important to make sure that you septic tank is in good working order. Very bad things can happen when it is not well maintained. It can become a major health hazard and something no one wants to deal with. As a homeowner it is your responsibility to make sure you maintain your septic tank.

Basic Precautions

When you have a septic tank you have to be a little careful. You will need to make sure you know the scheduled clean out dates so it does not overflow or back up. When the tank backs up it can bring raw sewage into your home back up through the pipes. This is obviously not a welcome occurrence.

You also need to use treatments as recommended by professionals. You may need to add something into your tank to help keep it functioning properly at least once a year. You should also know the location of your septic system so should al problem occur you will be able to see what is going on and check on the system.

Maintenance Tips

You need to make sure that you check your septic tank for leaks and damage. Also if you make major changes to your home, like adding another bathroom, you need to make sure your septic tank can handle the new addition. You may end up having to add a larger tank.

You should also make sure that you know all your tanks specifications in case something does happen or you need ask a professional a question about it. You should also make sure that you are in compliance with all local laws and regulations. You need to ensure that you septic system is safe.

Septic systems are a necessity if you are not tied into a city waste removal system. You need to take it seriously and be responsible with it. Your health, your family's health and the environment are a t risk should something go wrong with your septic system.
