Printing On Fabric

Author: Michael Russell

Have you seen T shirts with designs on them? Your home printer can print the same designs you see on the shirts in stores and you can save a lot of money making your own shirts.

To start making designs, you need an iron on transfer kit. These kits can be found at any computer store in the printer area. Some kits may come with images to use for your project, but don't expect a lot, they may only provide enough to get you started. You can also find your images from the internet, but this requires a lots of searching to find the ones you like. You can also buy software from the software area of the store and you will get about 10,000 images to use. It may be ok to use these images and put them on your shirts to sell, but check to see if they are copyrighted first.

If you do not own a printer yet, this would be a good time to buy one, but make sure that it is an ink jet. You may want to get a few ink cartridges, if you plan on selling your shirts. If you're just making the shirts for yourself, then one ink cartridge will work.

An iron is also needed to get the images onto the shirts but make sure that there's no rust on your iron. You are going to need a lots of shirts. Any color will do but if you're new to this, start with a white one.

To get started, you must decide what kind of image you want to put on your shirt. If you have the appropriate software, you just type into the search window what kind of image you want, and you will get a lot of results. If you haven't bought the software with the library of images, then use the web or the samples that are offered. Now load your iron on transfer software. It should show you a shirt and all you have to do is load the picture onto the shirt that's on the screen, then you can size the image the way you want it to be on the shirt. You can add words as well, if you like. Once you are finished, put your iron on transfer paper in the printer. Read the instructions carefully and make sure to load it correctly.

Once you get your iron on transfer sheet with the image on it, set your iron the way that the kit recommends. It is worth noting that if you have a picture and words, you will need to cut around the image and each letter and iron them all on separately, otherwise you will have the whole print on the shirt and it will look like it has been starched. Try ironing on other fabrics like tote bags. Your kit should tell you what you can iron onto.

Making shirts can be a fun hobby, and if you would like to make money on them, you can do that too. Just make sure that the images you use are not copyrighted. So if you would like to try it, go to your computer store.
