Auto Shipping Guide: Moving/Transporting your Car during Relocation

Author: Nancy Curry

Auto Shipping

One of the biggest challenges when moving is the transport of automobiles. It is not easy to leave your trusted car behind, and the challenge becomes even greater when the car in question is a collector item or a specialty car. In this guide you will find a few tips to consider before shipping your car cross country or overseas.

Timing

The first thing to consider is the timing of your move. Please allow 4-6 weeks in advance if you would like to have your car waiting for you when you reach your destination.

Insurance

We highly recommend that you insure your car prior to its long distance or overseas shipping. When the auto shipper will arrive to pick up your car, you will have to sign a bill of lading on which any damages to the car will be clearly marked. A survey of the car will also be conducted upon arrival to the destination to asses any damages that were incurred during transit.

Personal Items

Make sure that the car is emptied of all personal effects before it is loaded onto the car carrier. Your car shipping company will not be responsible for any personal items left behind in the car.

Delivery

Make sure that if you or an authorized party is not available to receive your car, that it will be stored in a secure storage facility where you will be able to pick it up at a more convenient time. This may be subject to additional charges.
