How to Better Control-Your Ball Flight

Author: Adam Beach

Many golfers struggle with obtaining the desired ball flight with their irons on shots into greens. Many greens or pin positions on the green require a certain ball flight to achieve an effective and close shot. Some holes require a high ball flight, some holes require a standard or normal ball flight and some holes require a low ball flight. There is a simple practice method that you can perform on the driving range that will show the difference between ball flights while using the same club.

Use your 8-iron first. This iron will allow you to see the differences in ball flights the easiest. First hit a couple from standard ball flight position, then a couple from the low ball flight position, followed last by hitting balls from the high ball position.

To Achieve A Standard Ball Flight

Legs shoulder width apart
Place the ball directly in the middle of your stance.
Use your normal swing and hit a few balls and watch the results

To Achieve A Low Ball Flight

-Legs shoulder width apart
-Place the ball 2 balls back from the standard ball placement in your stance
-Put 60% of your weight on your front leg and 40% on your back leg.
-Use your normal swing and hit a few balls and watch the results.

To Achieve A High Ball Flight
-Legs shoulder width apart
-Place the ball 2 balls forward from the standard ball placement in your stance
-Use your normal swing with one addition. On contact with the ball and during your follow through make sure that the back of your left hand (for right handed golfers) faces and pushes through to the intended target.
-Watch the results
